Forums

A forum can be used at BCOT for a class of students to discuss the topic at hand. It would be linked to a piece of work. The place where the online forum would be, is at boodle.

The forum is used because a user can make a comment about the subject, and other students can then write back and discuss it further or add any thing else that another student may have left out.
Forums are widely used throughout the web because people that have the same interests or hobbies can discuss it in one place.

Remote access

Remote access is gaining access over a machines, from one that may not even be on that network. we use remote access at BCOT to gain access to our documents at home. The reason for this would be if we needed to do some work at home, but did not have the correct rescourses.

The problem with remote access is there are usally technical issues envolving users permissions. This means not being able to acces to the document you want because the server will not allow it. The other main issue that we had at BCOT last year was if we were on a certain operating system, we could not use the remote access.

File transfer

File transfer is how the file is shared on to other devices. We transfer files at BCOT over the network, mainly to hand work into the lecturers. After it is marked, the lecturer can then transfer the work back to the student  for anything that may need to be changed.

Students can use boodle, drop box or any email client to do this. An example of a student using this would be if they are at home and wish to hand in a piece of work.
Boodle is used for the student, so they have rescources to help them with thier work. The few main file types that are transferd over boodle. These are: Word documents, presentation, spreadsheets, and videos.

File sharing

This is genrelly used to describe files being shared over a network, usually over the internet. Popular applications that use file sharing are : MSN messenger, dropbox and hotmail.
Most of the time msn messenger is used to share videos and photos between friends. Hotmail  is mostly used to send file attachments, such as documents or presentations.
Dropbox is a file folder, that contains many documents that the user can pick to put onto thier own computer. These files are on a server that can be accessed by anyone( that you give autorisation to), at anytime. Drop box would be the best out of these because of its ease of access.

Shared Databases

A shared databases in a database that can be accessed by certain people. It can be shared to selected people, or shared to everyone.
An example of a shared database would be a class register. This can be accessed by many lectures to mark whether or not students are, or are not attending a class. Every lecturer will have a register for their different classed, and take it at the beginning of a lesson.
It becomes a shared database because it is linked to student services. This is the place where students can get their EMA or ALG. Student services will need to see the register because the student will need to have attended all of their lesson in the week for them to be eligible for the bonus.

Web access

All students at BCOT have access to the web. The students must first log on to their user account first. This allows students to research on any work that thy may need help with. Thought the web, there is lots of sources of information including blogs, normal websites or even video! Students more than likely have a limit on how much they can download through the web because if there wasn't, it may slow other users down on the web.

Within BCOT you don't just have to be on a desktop computer to access the web. Though out the college there are lots of wireless access points, meaning a students can log onto the network with such devices as: Laptops, Phones or even portable gaming devices. But the students must log on with their information first before having access to the web.

Shared Resources

Withing BCOT both students and staff have access to shared resources. This means that mutiple people have access to them. At BCOT, the main shared resource is Boodle. This is a part of the collage site, where the lecturers can upload tasks for students to complete assignments. Students can also use boodle to upload work ready to be marked for the lecturer.

Another shared resource used widley across the college are the printers. This is a shared resource because everybody has access to them. The printers are used by the students for when they would like to hant in some work, wether it be completed or not. Completed work is handed in to be marked and then is kept in the students work folder.

In BCOT, the units are now slowly starting to need work handed in online through boodle. But this isnt the only way it can be handed in, students may email it to the lecturer or even use dropbox!.
